Cowper was in the Anglican Church and he was known for the beautiful poems he wrote, many sung as hymns. His poems were unique as they dealt with the simplicity of everyday life. He was described by Samuel Taylor Coleridge as the greatest poet of all time! Cowper himself went through severe doubts about his salvation and feared that he would be lost. The turmoil he went through is also reflected in some of his poetry. He was institutionalized at times due to his frenzied state of mind. He is famous for the Olney hymns bundle. ‘Light Shining Out of Darkness’ is one of his many famous poems. He befriended John Newton and through this, was induced to write several poems against slavery. Despite his soul struggles, the beauty of Cowper’s poems have and will bless many to the end of time.
