Campbell Morgan was born in Tetbury in England. His father he adhered to the strict Plymouth Brethren but did not remain part of them, leaving to become a Baptist minister. Morgan was very sickly as a child and this prompted him to be tutored at home. He did not attend school. When only 10years of age, he had been hugely inspired by listening to K.L. Moody on his first visit to England. From the age of 13, he often preached in rural chapel on a Sunday or a public holiday. He went through a time of despondency when between 19 and 20 years which eventually drove him to a deeper study of the Word. he Bible had become more of a reality than ever before and he would ever have it as central to his preaching and studies. At this time he was teaching at a Jewish School for boys, however he left teaching at the age of 23, ordained by the Presbyterian Church, appointed as the minister in both Stone and Rugeley consecutively. As a minister, when he had reached adulthood, he was seen as one of the most accomplished and respected ministers in the early 20th Century, although he had not had a formal education as so many others had done! What stands out about his preaching is that without the aids ministers resort to, he was able to so gain the attention of his audience that they listened spellbound by no other means as the simple expounding of God’s Word. Haynes, the evangelist, speaks of a meeting he attended along with 2500 others where the power of God was evident throughout the message. People concentrated on the preacher and forgot who was sitting around them. Although lacking in advanced education, he was nevertheless called the ’most astounding preacher the United States have heard!’. He was known to have preached 23,390 times as well as writing up to 70 books! His main study was the Word of God itself.
