Samuel Davies Text Sermons

The Puritan Writings are being turned to in greater measure by Christians these days, to discover the truths upheld by Christians in those days. Samuel Davies was born in New Castle County, Delaware and died on the 4th February 1761. His ministry formed part of the Great Awakening. He had been ordained in 1747, and he preached during the Great Awakening the centre point being Hanover, Virginia. It was at a time when Presbyterians were being seen as Nonconformists and persecuted as a result and Davies defended the Dissenters to such an extent that he went to court to defend them. He also called in the help and support of famous Scottish and English Dissenters. In the French and Indian war of 1745, his sermons encouraged Virginians to defend their borders. He accompanied Gilbert Tennent preaching in Scotland and England and there his sermons were greatly appreciated and a huge blessing to many. It was on this very trip that Davies also solicitated funds for the now the famous Princeton University of which he became its fourth president until his death. Davies is not only famous for his sermons which were printed, many of them available as written text but also for hymns he wrote.
