W.C.Burns was remembered and revered for his deep devotion to God. His father had been a minister. After Burn’s education at the Aberdeen Grammar School, he entered Aberdeen university where he found Christ in 1832. After completing his M.A. Degree in law studies, he switched to theological studies at Glasgow University. He excelled in Hebrew and Greek while there. The Presbyterian Church of Scotland ordained him, and he was to stand in for Robert Murray McCheyne when the latter went to the Holy Land. Around this time, he had a widespread ministry, travelling extensively. Together with other likeminded evangelical ministers, he left the Church of Scotland at the time of the Disruption and spent 2 years in Canada (1844-1846). He returned with a deep burden and desire to preach the gospel overseas and was consequently sent out as the first missionary to China. Burns’ aim was to reach the unreached in China. He weathered difficulties and challenges over there but persevered, God breaking through in the Pechuia District in 1854, resulting in many congregations being formed. He is known to have translated the ‘Pilgrim’s Progress’ as well as many hymns into Mandarin. He had started translating the Psalms into Mandarin before his death. He sadly died of fever at Nieu-chwang where his last words before he entered into the presence of the Lord were ‘Glory, Glory!’.
