Ann Steel Poems

Ann Steel was born in the town of Hampshire in England, the daughter of a preacher, William Steele who preached in the Baptist Church in Broughton England, fourteen miles from Hampshire. Anne tragically lost her mother at the age of three. Another sadness was that at the age of nineteen she was injured in her hip causing severe pain and suffering for the rest of her life. Her fiancée drowned two years later and interestingly enough, all these deep sorrows contributed to her writing hymns and poems of such depth that could only be born out of sorrow. She wrote hundred and forty four hymns and put thirty four Psalms into poetical form. She wrote a book, ‘Poems on Subjects Chiefly Devotional’ which was published in 1860 years after her death in 1778. Her poems were simply written, vivid and deep. She was able to reach many during her time and beyond.
