The Blessed Man - Lee Brainard

It is common for man to regard his life from the perspective of whether he thinks God is blessing him or not blessing him. This is legitimate. However, if we don’t have the mind of God in this matter — which we can only get from the Bible — then we are bound to make mistakes in our judgment.

The first thing we must understand is that the world we live in is not a playground, but a spiritual battlefield. The whole world lies in wickedness (1 John 5:19). Now in this scene of conflict, the proof of God’s blessing is not material things. It does not consist in the abundance of a man’s possessions (Luke 12:15). The proof of blessing is spiritual things — the things that are necessary to live an enlightened, obedient, spiritual life in this dark world.

So how do we get these spiritual things? By turning to God’s Word. In Psalm 1:1-2 we read, “Blessed is the man that walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law (the Word) of the LORD, and in his law (his word) he meditates day and night.” When a man seeks God in the Bible, faith is wrought in his heart (Rom. 10:17). This makes him pleasing to God (Heb. 11:6), gives him victory (1 John 5:4), and opens the door to God’s blessings.
