A sea of blood, wrath, sin, sorrow, misery – Thomas Brooks

Ah, what a sea of blood, of wrath, of sin, of sorrow and misery did the Lord Jesus wade through for your eternal good! Christ did not plead, “This cross is too heavy for Me to bear; this wrath is too great for Me to lie under; this cup of suffering, which has in it all the ingredients of divine wrath, is too bitter for Me to sip of how much more to drink the very dregs of it!” No! Christ does not plead the difficulty of the service but resolutely and bravely wades through all! “I gave My back to those who beat Me, and My cheeks to those who tore out My beard. I did not hide My face from scorn and spitting.” Isaiah 50:6. Christ bears . . .
His Father’s wrath,
the punishment of your sins,
the malice of Satan,
the rage of the world,
and sweetly and triumphantly passes through all.

Christ has freed you from . . .
all your enemies,
the curse of the law,
the damnatory power of sin,
the wrath of God,
the sting of death,
the torments of hell.

Since we have these promises, dear friends, let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence for God.” 2 Corinthians 7:1
