As the Body Without Breath Is Dead - Lee Brainard

One of the most shocking statements in the Bible is found in James 2:26, “As the body without breath is dead, so faith without works is dead.” What does this mean? Very simple. If you profess to be a Christian, yet your faith is not breathing — taking the Word of God in, speaking and living the Word of God out — then your faith is dead. No matter what you say, no matter how much you fuss, no matter how religious you are, you are not a believer in God’s sight.

This breathing test (signs of life test) holds true in every case and circumstance. “Indeed, a man may say, You have faith and I have works. Show me your faith without works and I will show you my faith by my works. You believe that there is one God? Good for you. Even the devils believe and tremble.” (James 2:18-19.)

Now what will you do with this information? The Bible says, “Examine yourselves, see if you be of the faith.” Will you compare your faith to the Word of God? If the carpenter from Nazareth came down here a second time and started preaching and teaching like he did the first time — upholding all that is taught in the Gospels and the Epistles — would you follow him or would you reject him as a troublemaker? Is believing on Christ a doctrine you talk about or is it a reality that lives in your heart, molding and coloring your whole life?
