Harry Ironside Audio Sermons

Harry Ironside crisscrossed America for 50 years and was known as one of the greatest Bible teachers of all time. He was the pastor of the Moody Bible Church for a 10 year stretch from 1938-1948. He preached at Billy Sunday’s funeral. Harry Ironside’s father died at the young age of 27 due to typhoid fever. Young Harry was only 2 years old at the time of his father’s death. His father had been an enthusiastic soul-winner, called the ‘eternity man’, because he confronted all he met with the question of where they would spend eternity. Although deeply religious as a young boy, learning Scripture off by heart from the young age of 3 and handing out tracts, Ironside was still unsaved. At the age of 10 his mother and family moved to Los Angeles. He had frequently been challenged about whether he was truly saved by Scot evangelists Donald Munro and John Smith and was glad to think he would escape their interrogations. Arriving in Los Angeles and finding no Sunday School, he started one, though only 11 years at that time. A tent was made from sacks and many children and adults filled it. Despite his religious zeal Harry was not truly born again. What was his surprise to return from home and to find Donald Munro visiting. The inevitable question came, “Are you born again?”. An uncle interposed and stated that Harry was preaching, young as he was. Munro persisted questioning him about preaching without the personal knowledge of his own salvation. He felt rebuked and stopped the Sunday School. Six months later, under deep conviction of sin, he found the Lord Jesus Christ as personal Savior. Harry was 13 years old. The very next day he won his first convert a man who was 70 years old. He joined the Salvation Army and assisted them with their outreaches and other activities. He was later to resign from the Salvation Army and joined the Brethren, when 20 years old. He helped with street outreaches and any other way he could. At the age of 20 he married Helen Scofield, the daughter of a Presbyterian minister. Based in Oakland, he ministered in churches, tents, missions, on the streets and in every way possible. His first invitation to minister in the East came in 1903. They trusted the Lord for every need. While his wife stayed at home to look after the growing family, Harry Ironside had an ever-widening ministry. He also wrote many books. Between 1916 and 1914, he preached close to 7000 times reaching well over a million people. He became the minister of the Moody Bible Church from 1930 until 1948. In his first 14 years there, somebody was saved at every service but two. He wrote over 80 books. He was truly a man whose life had been poured out in the service of the Master.
