James Montgomery Poems

James Montgomery was Scottish, the son of a Moravian missionary, who wrote many poems and hymns and was known for putting the psalms into poetical verse form. He was the author of twenty-two books. While studying at the Moravian School, secular studies were prohibited, but he managed to source, borrow and avidly read poetry books, determined to write his own poetry. He was unable to finish his studies at the College and served as an apprentice in different fields until he took over as editor of a Newspaper called the Sheffield Ivy. The country was in political turmoil at that time, and he landed up in jail more than once for his publications. Works were written from prison including the booklet ‘Prison Amusements’ in 1797. His poem ‘The Wanderer of Switzerland’ was a famous work of his, published in six parts with seven syllables with cross rhymes which is when a word at the end of a line rhymes with a word in the middle of the rhyme. Many poems were to flow from his pen which can still be sourced today.
