WE saw in Venice a picture of St. Mark and other holy champions delivering the fait city from the devil, who had resolved to raise a great shot in the Adriatic, flood the lagunes, and drown the inhabitant of the “bride of the sea.” All mere legend and lie, but for all that capable of mirroring the truth that the intercession of saints and God’s peculiar regard for them have oftentimes delivered the church.
