The highest good is comprised of lectures in Oswald chambers christian ethics class at the bible training college, London, between 1911 and 1915.

 . As a book: the highest good was first published in 1938. It was published as part of a combined volume with the pilgrims song book and thy great redemption in 1965.

In chambers christian ethics class at the bible training college, he used as a text James stalkers book, the ethic of Jesus according to the synoptic gospels (1909). Thus, the frequent use of quotes from stalker in these lectures. James stalker (18481927) was a scottish scholar and pastor who served as professor of church history at the united free church college, aberdeen, from 1902 to 1926. Other material from chambers teaching on ethics is found in biblical ethics (1947) and the moral foundations of life (1936).
