Isaac Watts Poems
Isaac Watts’ father was not only a clothier but a poet in his own right. Isaac was recognized as bright from an early age, studying Latin at the age of five. When only seven or eight years, he already wrote devotional pieces for his mother. He wrote deeply theological works when a young tutor and was asked to assist a pastor of an independent congregation in London when only twenty-four. He was later to take up the full position as pastor there. When affected by illness and having to do less strenuous work, he took to writing hymns and preaching at intervals. Among other writings, he wrote a volume of hymns, The psalms of David in verse form as well as moral songs for children. One of the most famous hymns of all time, ‘O God Our Help In Ages Past’ was written by him. He wrote countless works which have blessed many down the ages and still inspire and challenge today.
