William Cowper
William Cowper was an Englishman, converted to Christ in 1764 while recovering from a bout of insanity. He became a fervent Christian. William Cowper remained a steadfast evangelical throughout his life, though he suffered repeated attacks to his mind that robbed him of assurance of salvation. William Cowper wrote a number of excellent hymns for John Newton’s collection of “Olney Hymns.” He also wrote poems about nature and rural life. He says of his writing, “I am merry that I may decoy people into my company, and grave that they may be the better for it.”
