Introduction

Source

The lectures on the holy spirit were given in the christian doctrine class at the bible training col- lege, 1 london, during april and may 1915. Many of the other chapters in this volume are talks given to british commonwealth soldiers in egypt between 1915 and 1917. Where possible, they are identi- fied by date and location. The ymca camp at zeitoun 2 was located six miles northeast of cairo. After oswald chambers death in november 1917, a number of these messages were printed as leaflet sermons and distributed widely among troops during 1918 and 1919.

Foreword

It is my privilege to have been asked to write a brief foreword to this book, the latest addition to the treasurehouse of the Oswald chambers literature. The idea of a foreword is surely that some fact may be brought to light, the telling of which shall induce others to read and so share in the life-giving truth.

The writer enjoyed a close friendship with o. C. , and there came to his own life fresh spiritual impetus and vision as he not only listened to the exposition of truths, but as he saw those same truths practised and lived out in everyday contact with men and affairs. It was indeed a life lived in abandon to god.

The whole story of the o. C. Literature is an outstanding witness of the gracious hand of god. Oswald chambers spent the last two years of his life in YMCA work out in the desert in Egypt, in the thick of it with the men, every evening being devoted to a meeting for spiritual instruction on some vital theme. This book in particular is compiled largely from these talks, as well as from sermons delivered on Sundays. Then in November 1917 came his home-call into gods immediate presence, and a leaflet was printed and scattered among the men in Egypt and Palestine in time for Christmas. There was little thought at the time of the number of books to which this leaflet, entitled the place of help, was to be the forerunner. Other publications quickly began to follow, and each one was printed simultaneously in Egypt and in England. I have had the joy and privilege of being associated with the publishing from those early days right on until now; and with the growing demand for all the books, and for their translation into a number of languages, one feels confident that god will unfold yet more of his purpose in this great work.

So read and study and enjoy this new book, and find for yourself that the best is yet to be, as o. C. So frequently reminded us.
