Horatius Bonar lived at the same time as Robert Murray M’Cheyne. He was a well-known Scottish preacher and wrote hymns and poems. These were very well-received. He came of a family of ministers. His literature achievement and influence in the pulpit was such that the University of Aberdeen awarded him a Honorary Doctor of Divinity Degree.
