John Newton Poems
Newton will ever be famous with the continually sung poem he wrote which was also set to music, Amazing Grace. It is sung in secular and religious circles and is the story of his own redemption. Having a praying mother did not stop Newton from being a wild and unprincipled slave trader, but God stepped in answering his mother’s prayers and he was gloriously saved. Newton wrote poems with William Cowper who had influenced him to write poems and use them as hymns. Amazing Grace will remain his best known poem, but many others have deeply impacted and influenced men and women.
