Dwight Lyman Moody Text Sermons
Moody is one of the most well-known evangelists of all time. Born into a bricklayer’s family in Massachusetts, he lost his father at the young age of 4. There were 8 other children in the family bereft of a father. Moody did not gain much education reaching the level of a fifth-grade level today. Nobody would ever guess what an impact this boy would have upon the world as he grew up! He left home at the age of 17, first to work for his uncle in his Boston shoe store. It was the next year that he came to Christ after which he moved to Chicago to start up his own shoe store aiming to make a fortune of at least \$100,000. The burden for souls was soon to supersede his desire for wealth. He opened a mission Sunday School in 1858 in a slum area of Chicago. It was not long before it became a church to become the Illinois Independent Church later named the Moody Memorial Church. He felt called into full-time ministry in 1861 and took a leap of faith leaving his business to serve God full-time. Adults were drawn to attend prayer meetings arranged in the evening as well as English classes beneficial to the German and Scandinavian immigrants. He was to marry one of the Sunday School teachers, Emma C Revell. Moody was also the president of the YM CA for 4 years where he encouraged people to hand out tracts throughout the city as well as holding midday prayer meetings. Although he refused to fight in the civil war, he was there and called in to minister to the soldiers spiritually and there are many precious testimonies of his deathbed encounters with them. Sadly, the great Chicago fire destroyed his mission church in 1871 as well as the YMCA. He had a fresh anointing of his ministry after visiting New York to ask for funds to rebuild the burnt-out buildings, with a deeper emphasis being placed on evangelism. Ira Sankey was enlisted by Moody to sing at his meetings who was a powerful tool in the hands of God by medium of song. Moody had a very fruitful ministry in the England, Scotland and Ireland touring for two years, speaking at universities and churches and returning to the States a world- famous evangelist! Moody also saw the need to train others to evangelize and counsel people. Other factors to note linked to his life is the Moody Printing Press started which inspired people to hand out tracts across the country from horse-drawn ‘Gospel-wagons. The Moody Bible Institute was also started before his death. Millions of souls were reached through Moody’s life and preaching and he preached unabated until his death. Truly his was a life poured out in God’s service. How wonderful that we can still access his written work today.
