John Owen Text Sermons

John Owen was born in 1616 and his life was not destined to be an easy one. Every single one of his children died before him, he lived during political turmoil, the days of Cromwell and later Charles 11, where persecutions were the order of the day. The decapitated heads of his friends were on display for 20 years. He greatly feared during his lifetime that the church had become apostate to the extent that they questioned the Trinity. He wrote incessantly, whether books or pamphlets, on religion of politics, his pen was readily at his command. Interestingly Owen’s friends included great names like Milton and John Bunyan. He was also not scared to embroil himself in politics preaching for the parliament the very day after Charles 1’s funeral. He valued the Bible and studied it copiously depending on the Holy Spirit to reveal its hidden depths. While lecturing at Oxford, he encouraged students to gather to study the Word and pray. He died at Ealing in 1683. Owen emphasized a seeking to know God as the main aim of true Christianity. His writings are still accessible today for you and I to learn from his zeal of getting to know God better.
