Sam Jones Text Sermons
Samuel Porter Jones had been used by God to draw half a million souls to seek God for salvation and had preached to 25million in his lifetime! Samuel’s father had resisted the urge to become a Methodist minister as his four brothers had done, instead becoming a lawyer and business man with the view to earn more money. He was a devout Christian however. Samuel’s mother’s dying words had made a deep impression on him when he was only 9 years old. She had said, “Sam, I will never be able to return unto you, but you must come unto me!” Samuel’s poor health had induced him to study law from home. He had nervous dyspepsia and they thought alcohol would alleviate it. Instead of helping his ailment, he became an alcoholic. Despite this, he became an excellent and astute lawyer showing great promise. After only one year of study, he was appointed to the Georgia Bar in 1868. Sober, he was a brilliant lawyer, but intoxicated a hopeless failure and husband. In August 1872, God brought a remarkable change. During a drunken spree of 6 weeks, he heard that his father was dying and that he should rush home. His dying, broken hearted father spoke of Samuel’s recklessness and wife’s misery with such a husband. He begged Samuel to get right with God and meet him in Heaven one day. After that Samuel going to a bar and asking for a drink suddenly stopped in his tracts and saw himself as he really was, disreputable and unkept, a mockery to his brilliance as a lawyer. He instantaneously smashed the glass, fell on his knees, begging God for mercy. Getting back to his boarding house, he asked the landlady for a strong cup of coffee! He was only 24 years at that time. Not long afterwards, he walked down the aisle of his grandfather Sam Jones Snr’s church and dedicated himself to God. A week later, he was preaching his first sermon in the selfsame church. That was the start of many opportunities holding city-wide campaigns large numbers of souls found Christ, second only to Moody! He conducted 18 Revivals in Nashville alone, having up to 150,000 attended in total over 3 weeks, each night speaking to an audience of about 5000! His preaching was direct and unvarnished – a mighty hammer which smashed through prejudice and opposition. He suddenly dropped down dead, when only 59 years of age just having finished a campaign in Oklahoma. He had written many tracts and books and today we can still be challenged and inspired by his written work.
