The Most Profound Truth - Lee Brainard

Robert Dick Wilson was a scholar of the highest magnitude. He learned 45 languages, including Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek, and every language into which the Bible was translated prior to 600 AD. He threw his life and energy into defending the accuracy and historical reliability of the Bible against the Higher Criticism. He was for nearly three decades the William Henry Green Professor of Semitic languages at Princeton Theological Seminary.

With all of his learning, however, he never lost his childlike faith in the Bible and the God of the Bible. Once during a speaking engagement he was asked by a student, “Professor Wilson, In all your studies what is the most profound truth you have discovered?” He paused a moment, then replied, “Jesus loves me this I know, for the Bible tells me so!”

We would do well to let this same humble spirit take root in our breast. In the midst of all our learning and accomplishments, let us never forget how insignificant we are in the big picture and how significant he is — he is the center and focus of the big picture. This humble perspective is crucial to a meaningful relationship with God. As the Lord said, “Truly I say unto you, unless you become as little children, you will not enter into the kingdom of heaven.”
