Thomas Manton Text Sermons

Thomas Manton was Oliver Cromwell’s chaplain! He gave midweek lectures on Isaiah 53, on the Book of James, and on Jude from late 1640 to early 1650. He was invited to preach at parliament six times the first being on the 30th June 1647. He was appointed as one of the lecturers at Westminster Abbey, and later he gained the important post of becoming the rector of St Pauls. After King Charles’ return to power which he had advocated things went awry and his last years were full of upheaval. He resigned as pastor and preached in Covent Garden for the last time on the 17th August 1662, his sermon based on Hebrews 12:1. This did not stop his writings and preaching from his home having a license to do so. During this time, he was imprisoned for six months for violating the Conventicle Act which prohibited more than 6 people gathering for religious purposes unless immediate family.We may not know much of the Puritan, Thomas Manton today but those who lived in his times knew him as a revered skilled expository teacher and Spurgeon himself recommended his preaching. We are blessed to still be able to access of his written work in these days.
